Grand Romanesque Castle, Baroque Hospital
Wood, MDF, acrylic paint, 172 x 240 cm (each), 2025
At the end of the 19th century, before Lego existed, German children would play with small building bricks, assembling Rococo castles, majestic bridges, and “Oriental” pavilions. Praised by Albert Einstein and Walter Benjamin for fostering creativity in both children and adults, these miniature bricks served as a means to materialize imaginary dreams. Grand Romanesque Castle and Baroque Hospital are large-scale compositions made of painted wood, replicating the arrangements of private historical boxes of such building bricks that were offered for sale by those who had either abandoned their attempts to construct grand structures, or built them too many times. They depict a frozen moment suspended in the realm of potential – both before construction and after destruction – dismantled creations, organised ruins, ready-to-use elements for new fantasies.
